Congressman Francis Rooney statement on elimination of 1000th Python, May 21, 2018 | Chris Berardi (202-897-7700) | comments

Washington, D.C. - “Congratulations to the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), and the many hunters that have taken part in this program, on the elimination of their 1000th invasive Burmese Python. The twelve-foot-long python that is hanging in my office is a daily reminder of the need to eradicate this species and protect the unique ecosystem of our Everglades.

I am currently working with the Department of Interior and the House Natural Resources Committee to allow for hunting of Burmese Pythons within Everglades National Park, as well as to allow the male python tracking program organized by the Conservancy of Southwest Florida - and by doing so, speed the process of eliminating these snakes, which are not native to our area and have no natural predators.”

Background:

  • In August, Congressman Rooney participated in the SFWMD Python Elimination Program, where he helped capture and kill five Burmese pythons. One of those pythons hangs in his Congressional Office today.
  • Congressman Rooney has spoken on the House floor asking for the Department of Interior to take up a similar hunting program to the SFWMD Python Elimination Program.
