Washington, DC – Last evening, Congressman Francis Rooney voted in favor of the Veterans Administration (VA) Mission Act of 2018. This act will ensure veterans have timely access to the care they have earned.

Congressman Rooney stated, “It is our government’s obligation to properly care for the brave men and women who have protected and defended our nation, and it is an honor to vote in support of the VA Mission Act. Increasing efficiency of care and ensuring that our veterans are provided treatment when and where it is needed, are major steps forward in improving the Veterans Administration – however many reforms are still necessary. It is my hope that the Senate acts quickly to pass this bipartisan legislation.”

The VA Mission Act does the following:

  1. Consolidates VA community care programs to increase efficiency.
  2. Provides $5.2 billion to extend the CHOICE program for one year until the new consolidated program takes effect. The program offers veterans an opportunity to seek care outside the VA when care cannot be delivered on a certain timeline or when VA facilities are too far away.
  3. Increases VA ability to hire additional nurses and support staff.
  4. Includes an extension of benefits under the family caregivers program to veterans of all eras.
