Congressman Rooney Hosts Chairman Simpson of the House Energy and Water Development Appropriations Subcommittee, Former Speaker Boehner, and Army Corps of Engineers Lieutenant Colonel Reynolds on Tour of the Everglades and Lake Okeechobee Watershed

Washington, DC
 – On Friday, March 23rd, Congressman Francis Rooney will lead a tour of the Everglades and the Lake Okeechobee watershed. The tour will include Chairman of the House Energy and Water Development Appropriations Subcommittee Mike Simpson, Former Speaker of the House John Boehner, Deputy District Commander for South Florida of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Lieutenant Colonel Jennifer Reynolds, and Paul Warner, Principal Scientist, Office of Federal Policy & Coordination of the South Florida Water Management District.

Congressman Rooney stated “I am thankful to Chairman Simpson, Speaker Boehner, and Lt. Colonel Reynolds, for taking time away from their many responsibilities to visit our Everglades and the Lake Okeechobee Watershed. To get the promised results from the federal government on Everglades restoration projects, and to speed up repairs on the dilapidated Herbert Hoover Dike, the importance of the Everglades must be fully understood by lawmakers in Washington. This is why I have and will continue to bring my colleagues to South Florida so they can see firsthand the problems we face, and learn of the consequences of inaction for the third most populous state in the nation.”

“Congressman Rooney is a great Floridian and has been one of the strongest advocates working to preserve and restore America’s Everglades,” said South Florida Water Management District Governing Board Chairman Dan O’Keefe. “His efforts for the Everglades will leave a lasting impact on the environment for generations to come.”

The Lake Okeechobee Watershed and Everglades have far-ranging impact on the entire State of Florida and the country, but especially in Southeast and Southwest Florida, where 55% of all real estate in the state is affected - 2 trillion dollars of economic impact across 164 cities and 16 counties. CERP was enacted in 2000 and we need its 68 projects to be executed.  We also need to expedite critical repairs to the Herbert Hoover Dike. Congressman Rooney looks forward to showing Chairman Simpson and Speaker Boehner around the region, with the help of Lt. Col. Reynolds and Mr. Warner’s expertise, to showcase the importance of the Everglades not just for Florida but for the entire country.

Background:

Congressman Rooney has previously welcomed House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Chairman of the House Subcommittee on the Interior and Environment Ken Calvert, on visits to the Everglades. In addition, Congressman Rooney has sent a letter to President Trump, co-signed by every member of the Florida Congressional delegation, that called on the President to support Everglades Restoration projects in his fiscal year 2018 Budget. He has also authored a letter to the Interior and Environment Appropriations Committee requesting funding for Everglades projects. Congressman Rooney is a member of the Everglades Caucus and the Estuary Caucus.
