Congressman Francis Rooney Statement on Resolution Supporting the Iranian People
Washington, DC- Congressman Francis Rooney issued the following statement on the passage of H.Res. 676 to support the Iranian people.
“Today’s vote in the House of Representatives sends a strong signal to the people of Iran that the United States stands with them in the aftermath of recent protests.
“The protests highlight the asymmetries between the views of the government and its citizens. The destabilizing activities around the Middle East by Ayatollah Khamenei’s regime lack support at home. Unlike past protests supported by young, cosmopolitan elites, these demonstrations are supported by a broad, conservative, working-class, the historic base of the theocratic Iranian regime, illustrating the declining legitimacy of the government.
“It is important for the United States to encourage the democratic potential of the Iranian people, and be ready if an opportunity for the transition to democracy and free markets occurs. Passage of this resolution is a good start.”
In October, Congressman Rooney wrote an op-ed describing the distinctions between the views of Iranians and the Ayatollah’s repressive regime, and stressed the need for the United States to consider these asymmetries when crafting an Iranian foreign policy strategy.
