Congressman Francis Rooney Provides Testimony on Water Quality to Florida State House Subcommittee

Tallahassee, FL - Congressman Francis Rooney will testify before the Natural Resources & Public Lands Subcommittee, chaired by State Representative Holly Raschein, on Wednesday, February 22, 2017. The focus of Congressman Rooney’s testimony will be to provide an update on projects that have been approved as part of the Central Everglades Restoration Project (CERP) and authorized by the Water Resource Development Acts (WRDA) of 2007, 2014, and 2016; and to seek support in uniting all parties in focusing on completion of these projects. Also testifying will be State Representative Matt Caldwell, chairman of the Government Accountability Committee.

Congressman Rooney stated; “I would like to thank Chairman Caldwell and all of the subcommittee members for inviting me to speak on this topic of critical importance to our region.  There are several projects authorized in the WRDA legislation passed in 2007, 2014 and 2016 which need funding to complete. The Lake Okeechobee watershed and Everglades have a far ranging impact to the entire State of Florida and to the country, but particularly in Southeast and Southwest Florida- where 55% of real estate in the state is affected, 2 trillion dollars of economic impact across 164 cities and 16 counties. We must stay focused and united to secure the funding necessary from Washington to complete these projects. The federal government has a lot of catching up to do, in order to meet its obligations”

Representative Caldwell stated; “Congressman Rooney and I share a passion for Everglades restoration and the protection of the estuaries affected by the Lake Okeechobee discharges. I look forward to a continued partnership with the congressman and federal government to complete the projects that we have waited on for too many years.”

On February 3rd, all members of the Florida Congressional delegation signed a letter, led by Congressman Rooney, that was sent to President Trump. This letter called on the President to support Everglades Restoration projects in his fiscal year 2018 Budget. Today’s hearing is a continuation of efforts to bring attention to the water quality issues affecting Florida and to build awareness and consensus for funding projects that have already been approved. Congressman Rooney is also a member of the Everglades Caucus, which is focused on restoration and preservation of the Everglades.
