Congressman Francis Rooney meets with Everglades Foundation Board of Directors

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Francis Rooney welcomed members of the Everglades Foundation Board of Directors this morning to discuss progress being made towards funding Everglades restoration projects and share ideas for moving the process forward quickly.

Congressman Rooney stated, “The Everglades have a far-ranging impact to the entire State of Florida and to the country.  Our economy has been decimated. Businesses have closed. We all have a vested interest.

I fully support, and am actively working towards, solutions that will solve our water issues in the quickest and most efficient way possible, and restore the Everglades. Any plan must support the Central Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) and ensure completion of repairs to the Herbert Hoover Dike are not delayed.

Our mission at the federal level must remain clearly defined to earn the support necessary to secure the federal funding already approved through the Water Resource Development Acts (WRDA) of 2007, 2014, 2016, and for moving up planning currently scheduled for 2018.”

Congressman Rooney added, “The Everglades foundation has had a major impact on bringing attention to the necessity of restoring our Everglades and in educating elected officials and the public on this unique ecosystem that provides economic, recreational and environmental benefits to our state. I look forward to continuing to work together with the Foundation to restore our Everglades.”

Congressman Rooney has testified four times on water quality issues. In addition to this testimony, the Florida Congressional delegation has signed a letter, led by Congressman Rooney, that was sent to President Trump. This letter called on the President to support Everglades Restoration projects in his fiscal year 2018 Budget. Congressman Rooney is also a member of the Everglades Caucus.
