Congressman Francis Rooney provides update to Lee County Commissioners

Fort Myers, FL – Congressman Francis Rooney addressed the Lee County Board of County Commissioners today and provided an update on policies and legislation in Washington that is impacting Southwest Florida citizens.

Congressman Rooney stated, “I am honored to provide an update to our Lee County Commissioners on legislation and initiatives being worked on in Washington. My number one priority continues to be fixing our water quality issues and obtaining the funding from the federal government that is long overdue, so that we can clean-up the Lake Okeechobee watershed and restore our Everglades. I have had several meetings with the Army Corp of Engineers, testified four times on water quality, and led a letter to President Trump, signed by all members of the Florida Congressional delegation, that requests Everglades funding be included in any infrastructure budget.”

In addition to water quality, Congressman Rooney also updated the Commissioners on the National Flood Insurance Program. Florida has been a “donor state” for decades, paying 27% of the NFIP’s annual premiums while only accounting for 7.3% of the dollars paid in claims since 1978; and that the counties of Collier and Lee have paid 4.8% of the premiums but involved only 0.18% of the claims over that same period. Congressman Rooney is working to ensure that flood insurance for Southwest Florida is fair, affordable and available.

Congressman Rooney has focused on meeting with stakeholders throughout the district during this Congressional recess period. He has held forums with the Realtors Associations of Collier and Lee Counties, Insurance professionals, the Hotel and Lodging Associations, and tomorrow will address Lee Health system employees and the Chamber of Commerce of Southwest Florida. Congressman Rooney has also held office hours to meet with constituents on any issue of concern that they might have.
