Congressman Francis Rooney statement in response to Governor Scott's Efforts to Restore the Everglades
Washington, DC – Congressman Francis Rooney issued the following statement in response to Governor Rick Scott’s efforts to restore the Everglades.
“The single biggest issue impacting our Southwest Florida community is water quality. Our economy is forever tied to our ecology, and having clean water flowing through our rivers, streams, estuaries and Everglades.
I fully support solutions that will solve our water issues in the quickest and most efficient way possible, and I agree with Governor Rick Scott and his priorities for restoring the Everglades. Any plan must support the Central Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP), place priority on protecting land rights with no use of eminent domain, must avoid any long-term bonding debt and ensure completion of repairs to the Herbert Hoover Dike are not delayed.
At the federal level, I will continue to be vigorously focused on securing the federal funding already approved through the Water Resource Development Acts (WRDA) of 2007, 2014, 2016, and for moving up planning currently scheduled for 2018.
Background: Congressman Rooney has testified four times on water quality issues. In addition to this testimony, the Florida Congressional delegation has signed a letter, led by Congressman Rooney, that was sent to President Trump. This letter called on the President to support Everglades Restoration projects in his fiscal year 2018 Budget and included the signatures of all Florida Congressmen. Congressman Rooney is also a member of the Everglades Caucus.
