Congressman Francis Rooney Leads Tour of Everglades and Lake Okeechobee Watershed

Washington, DC - Congressman Francis Rooney will be leading a tour of Interior appropriations projects, CERP projects, and the Everglades National Park on Saturday, March 18th. The tour will include Congressman Ken Calvert, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on the Interior and Environment. This tour is intended to highlight the importance of funding projects which have already been approved and designed.

Congressman Rooney stated “I would like to thank Committee Chairman Calvert for visiting our piece of paradise here in Southwest Florida. The best way to comprehend the beauty and importance of our Everglades and the Lake Okeechobee watershed is to see it first hand; and I am thankful to him for taking time away from his other responsibilities to be here. While the bulk of Everglades restoration funding goes to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for construction and maintenance projects, the Department of Interior (DOI) provides significant support for restoration programs, including CERP. I will continue to encourage the Committee to provide funding for the DOI to carry out its crucial duties, as they relate to our Everglades.”

Congressman Rooney has testified four times on water quality issues. In addition to this testimony, the Florida Congressional delegation has signed a letter, led by Congressman Rooney, that was sent to President Trump. This letter called on the President to support Everglades Restoration projects in his fiscal year 2018 Budget. Congressman Rooney is also a member of the Everglades Caucus.
